The District Council Affairs Department of the Government of Meghalaya, as an Administrative Department, began functioning since the inception of the State of Meghalaya in 1972. In the erstwhile composite State of Assam, matters relating to the District Councils were looked after by the Tribal Affairs Department.

The District Council Affairs Department functions only at the Secretariat level and there are no Directorates or Sub-Ordinate offices under it. The diagram below shows the present Organisational Structure at the Secretariat Level.
